Offline Captioning (for prerecorded programs)
< Back

CCS is a national leader in providing offline captioning services for pre-recorded programming. Offline captions are prepared in advance of the program’s broadcast or before the duplication of tapes, in the case of home video, corporate training tapes, etc. Offline captioning techniques allow for the most accurate captioning available, as the captioning can be quality controlled and checked before it airs or is recorded.

CCS’s highly trained captioners work from worktapes to view the program and create the captions. CCS captions verbatim and assigns time codes to sync the captions to the audio. Captions are also placed on the screen underneath the speaker to help the viewer identify who is speaking. Sound effects (door slamming, phone ringing, etc.) that are crucial to the plot and action are also captioned.

In general, it takes as much as 15 hours to caption a one-hour program. Each caption must be created, timed and placed, and the entire program is reviewed with the captions to check for accuracy of the wording, spelling, punctuation, and timing.

Once the captions have been completed, CCS can either provide the caption files to the client or the client’s facility for the “encoding” process. During encoding, the captions are transferred to the final captioned master. All dubs made from the captioned master will automatically contain captions. Captions will also be present when satellite feeds of a captioned master are broadcast.

CCS can also provide encoding services for an additional fee.

CCS is committed to working with every client to ensure that production deadlines are met. CCS will determine with each client a captioning schedule that will provide the highest-quality captions in the most efficient manner possible.
